A Rescue on Thin Ice, from The Martyr’s Mirror, 1685

Dirk Willems, imprisoned and tortured for his religious views, escaped in 1569 and fled across a frozen river. When a pursuer fell through the thin ice, Willems turned back in compassion and rescued him. Willems was taken back into custody and subsequently burned at the stake.
